1943 Austin K4/Merryweather 60ft Turntable Ladder
This 1943 Austin K4/Merryweather (reg-GXN 208) with the standard 60ft hand-operated turntable ladder was issued by the Home Office to the National Fire Service (Aug 18th,1941 - April 1st,1948) and was used in North Devon at Barnstable.In 1948 with the re-organisation of County brigades,it passed to Somerset Fire Brigade and was stationed at Yeovil. This 1943 Austin K4.Merryweather TL remained in active service until 1976 before going into preservation having given over 40 years service.

The appliance(GXN218)was actually registered from 1942(Home Office Reference No-18)and was originally stationed at Bridgewater Fire Station in Somerset until 1946.It was then passed onto Taunton Fire Station and served their until 1975.

Thankyou Andy for yes,spotting its Shoreham Airport (West Sussex) and the control tower/reception/restaurant building.The airport actually celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year.I can't now remember when I took this picture,but the appliance was at Shoreham Airport to be included in a shot for the TV Drama Series Poirot.Notice the dome's(props)on the fence pillars,also alot of filming was done inside the building in the reception and the restaurant areas(see the dom lights)and many changes were made there also.
I've pictures of Shoreham(old and new)so really must wipe the dust off them and send some in,especially this year being the 100th Anniversary of Shoreham Airport,the oldest,privately run airport in the UK.

I love the Art Deco lines of this building quite similar to the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. You can imagine a Jazz Orchestra greeting folk as they leave on the Dakota's and RFC aces returning intact in Sopwith Camels. Must come down to see the anniversary if anything is planned.

Amazing this old machine has survived, I served at Bridgwater with it in 1966, when it was transferred to Taunton, :-)

I haven't seen this old Austin K4/Merryweather TL for a long while so can only assume its still about.It would be nice if someone could give us an update please.
