Dennis 'N' Types DU179 and LP8389
Dennis 'N' Types DU179 and LP8389 head back from Brighton under their own power, following the 2008 HCVS London to Brighton Run. LP 8389 "Jezebel" took second in class, with DU 179 taking third. FA 1075 took first place, meaning the top three in the "open cab fire appliances" category were all 'N' Types, 100 years after Dennis started making motorised fire appliances.
DU179 has pneumatics following a mid-20s factory conversion, while Jezebel retains solid tyres.

The reason? While many deliveries were still being made by horse drawn wagons, cast off horseshoe nails were often littered along roadways and could be a major source of punctures. Changing a wheel was not helpful in ensuring a decent response time to a fire call!
But pneumatic tires were much more rapidly adopted in the US, with most fire trucks being fitted with them by the early 20s, while some new fire appliances in Britain were still being delivered o solid tires a decade later....
