Fire Engines Photos

Hi Yelp Bullhorn, do you have any details on the Mercedes Sprinter light fire appliance ? I would like to know the spec if possible and details of crewing and equipment.We have some Sprinters and wondered how they compare. PS Great photos.Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul,

Staffordshire F&RS recently placed a Mercedes Sprinter 416 CDi/Local Body-Builder on-the-run at Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent. They refer to this vehicle as a 'Targeted Response Vehicle': it is basically a small fires unit, responding to all small fires (including car fires) in the Stoke-on-Trent area, therefore freeing-up major pumps.

It has a crew of three to four that operate independently from the crews that man the two wholetime pumps at Hanley.

It has been so successful that Staffordshire intend to replace a wholetime pump with one of these vehicles at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford and Burton.

Good pic! Do you have an info as to what has happened to the old Dennis Rescue Tender from Newcastle or Longton? I assume the old Stafford Rescue Tender is now in Stoke somewhere since Stafford got the Scania RT. Thanks

David, the Dennis Sabre RT from Stafford (W507 VRE) has gone to Longton after the arrival of the Scania HRT at Stafford.
Longton's Dennis RS rescue tender (G317 DRF) was scrapped a couple of years back with a defective chassis. Since then Longton used N142 DVT - a Dennis Sabre ex-pump as their RT.
Lichfield's Dennis RS rescue tender (G319 DRF) has also retired and is not being replaced. I am unsure whether it has been sold on. So now Lichfield just has the two pumps.

Ah right, thanks for that! I liked those old Dennis RTs, but with the amount of equipment on standard pumps now they probably have less need for Rts. Its a shame Staffordshire have moved away from the Dennis' in general these days as well. Thanks again for the info!

Paul, you might be interested to learn that the aforementioned TRV has recently had its chassis bent in an RTC. It might yet be written off. Currently a 1993 reserve Dennis RS is deputizing.

Well that TRV lasted a while! On a side note, Penkridge appears to be running a Scania now as opposed to its MAN appliance. Has there been a reshuffle with regards to appliances? Any up to date Staffordshire fleetlist available id be hugely grateful!

David, Penkridge now have ex-Stafford Scanny DX 54 MWF on the run. Penkridge's old M.A.N. has gone to Gnosall.

The TRV has not been written off as stated in the FBS publication fire cover, I followed it from Hilderstone to Longton on Sunday 3rd of August. It was off the run in June 2008, Dennis RS PRL K770DFA was operating in the role.

Many thanks Yelp for the information. North Yorks are pressing ahead with the Merc Sprinter vans labled " Community Safety Vehicles " with two crew.( See picture 7158 and picture 7152 ).Don't think they have attended many jobs yet. They are backed up by the normal attendance to the type of incident.

Ah ok, thanks for that. Do you know if Staffordshire have acquired any new MAN appliances? Only I saw a news bit on the regional news recently and one of Hanleys officers was interviewed infront of what looked like a MAN TGA or TGM chassis (It wasnt one of the New Dimension appliances as it had Staffs markings and a crew cab!) Im full of questions so thanks for taking the time!

Yeh Staffordshire have 3 MAN TGM 13.280 4x4 Emergency One Pumps, DX08MKC IS due to be allocated to Cannock as a WrT replacing Scania DX54MWJ. Two others have been allocated as PRL's to Ipstones & Longnor which will replace M113 & 114WVT both Dennis SS239 & JDC bodied.

Cannock's new 4x4 M.A.N. is registered DX08 MKD. Also, it has been suggested that Longnor's new M.A.N. might not carry rescue gear and will be a Water Ladder only. Anybody else heard this?

Apologies for the error, it should have been DX08MKD(447)Cannock WrT, DX08MKE(448) Ipstones PRL and DX08MKF(449)Longnor PRL. I doubt Longnor would be without cutting gear given the rural location. Granted Leek is only 9 miles away, Ipstones 11 miles and Buxton 7 miles but most if not all Fire & Rescue Services pumping appliances carry some sort of cutting equipment. At the moment Ipstones PRL carries a 10.5m ladder in place of their 13.5m ladder due to restrictions in the village. I think their new MAN will do the same.

Adam, I have recently contributed two photos of one of Staffordshire's new 4x4 MAN pumps: picture 9972 and picture 9977. The appliance is DX08 MKC destined for Longnor. DX08 MKD is for Cannock and DX08 MKE is for Ipstones.

All three are at Hanley workshops, as too is M113 WVT from Longnor in a somewhat sorry state. Does anybody know what Longnor are currently running?
