Peterborough V.F.B.1970 Dennis 45/Dennis WrL
This is a 1970 Dennis 45/Dennis Water Tender Ladder powered by a Rolls Royce B81 petrol engine.The appliance was in service with the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade in Cambridgeshire from December 1970 until going out of service in 1985.It then went into presevation with the Volunteer Brigade and was still in presevation when this photo was taken in the Summer of 1992 at the Southampton Fire Engine Rally at the Royal Victoria Country Park,Netley,Southampton.
The Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1884 by businessmen who declared that they had no faith in the Corporation Fire Brigade,and actually even today,although now being a unit with the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is still a distinctly private brigade.

Interesting that England has only a handful of fire stations staffed by unpaid volunteers.
Most other countries have at least 50% of their firefighter strength represented by unpaid volunteers, many like the US and France are around 75%, and Germany and Austria are over 90%.
The FBU has of course resisted the idea of unpaid volunteers, but as fire services become increasingly squeezed financially it seems likely to become inevitable....
