Excuse me, but I never thought 'state of the art' and 'Mercedes Sprinter' could be used in the same sentence! Give me 'proper' control units like this ERF any day.

I believe this appliance is now on the run in Southern Ireland.

I think the 'state of art' refers to the equipment fitted to the Sprinter rather than the vehicle itself. Command and Control programs involving the internet downloading of mapping has been revolutionised over the past 3 years.

The above ERF was recently sold to County Carlow, Southern Ireland, where it now runs as 87-CW-1377.

You are right, Barry; I should have elaborated a little!

The new Sprinter cost over £100, 000. It has three laptop computers and mobile phone and internet connectivity. It possesses the ability to link directly with the Police helicopter to display live images and photos on internal and external TV screens. Hi-tec mapping software can display Ordnance Survey maps as well as localized maps with fire crews, appliances and equipment locations overlayed.

Not only externally, but internally it bears little resemblance to this 20 year-old ERF which is basically a van containing white boards, magic markers, walkie-talkies and a phone. Who says that progress has to be pretty?!
