It's worth mentioning that this was purchased from Cheshire Fire Brigade, and was originally registered E717 SON, having begun its life prior to that as a demonstrator.

This has been off the run for a couple of years now and is languishing at National HQ awaiting a decision about replacing the booms onto a new chassis.
This machine brings back both happy and sad memories. At the time of the 911 atrocity, Cheshire had just bought from Merseyside the Volvo ALP to replace this machine. The driver/operators on all watches at Chester had been trained on the new appliance, and this machine was now spare. Following 911 much charity fund raising was organised and we in Chester decided to play our part. This machine was parked outside Chester Town Hall (in the October)and elevated and extended to full working height. I lived in the cage continually, a full 48 hours providing a focal point for the street collections. Fortunately the weather was dry and sunny but it became very cold at night. Both on duty and off duty as well as retired fire-fighters supported by volunteers collected on the streets of the City. The event received magnificent support from the public and local business. Some months later I was able to attend the American Embassy in London to present a cheque from Cheshire FRS; totalling £64, 000. Chester raised £32, 000 for FDNY Widows and Orphans. The additional £32, 000 being raised by the remaining Cheshire Fire Stations. A very very emotionally draining event!
Good work Tony. It's a shame it's predesessor WFM465W didn't last long at Chester as Macclesfield's WFM464W suffered a cracked chassis similar to Dorset's RLJ999X. I never saw that HP at Chester eventhough I lived near Chester but I did have a ride in 3624 FM many years earlier.
