Bedford Foam Tanker Humberside Fire Brigade
1968. Bedford KM Foam Tanker with bodywork by HCB Angus. New to Lindsey County Fire Brigade, Lincolnshire. Passed to Humberside Fire Brigade in 1974 on Government boundaries change, served its entire service at Pelham Road Fire Station in Immingham, covering the area close to the Town covered by the vast Petrochemical and oil refineries on the banks of the River Humber. out of service in 1984

Bedford, the best fire engine in the world.
Looked good, sounded better and compared to the modern appliances of today, far more reliable.

Unusual to see an older appliance witha 6x4 chassis apart from the Ford Wot 1 because most are 4x2, s. Unlike newer appliances which are 6x4 and 6x2, s HP, s Carps, ARP, s AlP, s Etc.

Well, the FOT was certainly on the run in 1991 when I left Imminghan on promotion to BHQ in Hessle!

according to Aidan Fisher's excellent new book on HCB Angus the non round tanks of HCB water carriers were fabricated by Longwell Green of Bristol on a subcontract to HCB.

In response to Alan's comment, according to my lists the Bedford FoT was replaced at Immingham by Dennis DF133 B229 VRH and that would have been the appliance on the run in 1991. Does anybody have any pix of any other Lindsey County appliances?

I served on this Foam Tender for 7 years at Immingham from 1977 until 1984 before I transferred to Grimsby. This HGV class 2 appliance was passionately nicknamed "The Pig" on watch. The reason because, when fully laden with 2000 gallons of foam and a total weight of 20 tons, you ideally needed to be in 2nd gear before taking the incline at the front of the station. If you had to brake to give way to traffic (it was a main road) from a standing start in first gear up that incline the appliance had a tendency to not want to turn, instead shoving the front end dangerously close to the offside pavement! Also, because of the weight, the tyres had flat spots. Particularly noticeable from cold, the whole appliance would "bounce along the road". Eventually getting up to speed this was an experience to be believed especially when turning out to Scunthorpe on the new A180 which itself was a horrible road anyway!

Graham: Do you know what engine it had? Some of these TK tandem axle 20 ton trucks had AEC 470 diesels, but were still not too snappy when fully loaded….
