Will york be getting any of these paul?
They have more shape than the outgoing model, but the cab/bodywork assembly looks a bit of missmash, and the crew cab doors look very narrow.
The bodywork also looks very low also, but was meant to be like that i guess.
Anyway, looks far better than the outgoing model, be nice too see one on the run.
Is the 54 plate at york due to go soon, as the 56 plate replaced a 53 plate.
Fantastic photos mate, please keep adding please Paul, cheers, John.

this looks like the worst new Volvo FL i have ever seen!
the rear cab and the window look stupid but the rear bodywork looks alright

Added by Adam Moore on 10 January 2008.
Yes Adam, i think you are right, the West yorkshire ones look nicer in my opinion, these just look a bit of a missmash, the crew cab looks stupid.

Might go to Malton on Monday to have a proper look at one, but my 1st impressions aren't looking too good!

Wish they'd buy Scanias and pain them white, Now that is an appliance!

Added by John Johnstone on 11 January 2008.
Adam, how right you are ! Apparently Volvo are bringing a new FLM chassis with a full volvo crew cab but I have been told it has been delayed. The cab conversion on this vehicle was carried out by Emergency one from Scotland, then the plastic body added. When you stand at the side of the thing the crew cab windows are well over 6 foot from the ground.

The new Volvo crew cab is the same as in picture 3951

The Irish built Sidhean Teo appliances have a Volvo crewcab on a FL chassis & look far better than this. No offence to anyone but the crewcab is garish on this.

Added by Bryan Sweeney on 12 January 2008.
Bryan, you are right, the whole thing looks as if it's been made from so many different parts of nothing that matches.

Although i'm sick and tired of the old and tired looking FL6/H model, this appliance just doesn't look right.

I hope that North Yorks buy the Volvo crew cab in future instead of this.

Added by John Johnstone on 12 January 2008.
There are two FL variants - the FLL and the FLM - the irish appliances and those in West Yorks and I believe Greater Manchester will be FLL machines. The cab on these appears to be a Daf cab like the machines in Lancashire. These FLM things do look like they have Renault cabs...

Added by Rob on 13 January 2008.
East Sussex have received the first 2 of 14, fitted with the Volvo safety cab.
There has been about a 4 month delay, but I'm glad they picked the Volvo cab, it looks OK with the JDC body. I think John summed up everyones first impressions
when fitted with the Emergency One cab......It just doesn't look right.
Hampshire have just received 7 from E one, first comment was :- there ugly !!!

Added by Gordon Woods on 13 January 2008.
The 2 variants of the FL chassis has nothing to do with the type of cab fitted.
The FLL is based on 19.5 inch wheels with steel or air suspension, the FLM is based on 22.5 inch wheels with steel suspension only. The E one cab is based on the Volvo Day Cab, with the Volvo Safety Cab based on the Renault Cab but with
a Volvo front. For a picture of the first East Sussex FLL check out....

Thanks for that Gordon, i've just taken a look and the east sussex one looks quite a nice appliance.

You can tell it's based on a Renault/Daf cab, but it looks more modern than the outgoing FL/FLH model.
I guess it was the only option for North Yorkshire to but the lower model, especially those that may be needed in York due to height restrictions, but no matter what, it's an ugly looking appliance!

Just had a look at the East Sussex Volvo, and I've seen the model Greater Manchester are to get, they look a lot better. North Yorkshire found a number of there older Volvo FL had some serious corrosion problems with the chassis and had to take a number of them off the road, this resulted in borrowing appliances from other brigades until there own were sent for repair. Some were beyond economical repair so they had to make a decision faily quickly and decided to go for the this model and not wait for the Volvo crew cab. They are looking at present at the next appliances, I have been told they will be Volvo FL's but not sure what cab at this stage. And with air suspension on the rear to allow easier access to the 13.5 ladder buy lowering the back end when the ladder is required.

Paul, do you know which appliances were written off or suffered the chassis corrosion? and also, do you know which stations are currently using appliances from other brigades?
Thanks Paul, John,

put the word Midlum in the search engine and see what you think - is it the same as the Renault cab? It has that sloping window.

Further to my comment about Irish Sidhean Teo Volvos, it will be interesting (for those of us in Northern Ireland) to see if the NIFRS will go with the Volvo Crew cab or will they go with a Browns Coachworks built crewcab & if so what it will look like.

Added by Bryan Sweeney on 20 January 2008.
Re my previous post, the cab was a joint venture between Daf & Renault.
Volvo own part of Renault, hence them pinching the cab to replace the old fl cab.
The Dafs based in the lancs fleet look nicer than the volvos with the tvac body work/crew cab.
A lot of manufacturers share cabs nowadays to keep costs down, hence it's just a case of re-badging and a slightly different interior trim.
Look at the old erf's in the bucks fleet, using the old man cab.
Hope this helps, cheers to all, John.

That is the ugliest appliance I have ever seen! wat a shambles! be embarrassed to ride on that!

Added by Peter on 13 February 2008.
whoever designed and built the crewcab for this ought to be shot! its just terrible. how many of these have NYFRS ordered? not too many i hope!

Added by Alex on 14 March 2008.
Hi Alex. North Yorkshire have 4 on the run at the moment and a think 4 more on order for delivery later this year around the October/November time. I am not sure at this stage which cab they will have, It could this one but hopefully the all in one Volvo safety cab which was originally ordered, but they then choose this one due to the delay in getting the volvo cab.

Added by Paul Warnock on 16 March 2008.
I have just heard that 4 Volvo FLM rescue pumps are to be delivered later this year ( September ). Apparently they will have the all in one Volvo cab ? and not a cab like the one in this photo. They will also have smaller wheels and air suspension on the rear to give better access to the 13.5 ladder, there has been some difficulties with the present FLM's with there hight.

Added by Paul Warnock on 04 July 2008.
I think Hampshire are getting these new volvo/emergency-one appliances as well, although it looks like theirs might be the FLL instead of this FLM. But what i do know is that they don't look any better than the North Yorkshire examples (How they managed to make an appliance look as bad is unknown to me)

Added by Alex on 25 July 2008.
Because they scrimp and save money where they can and end up with crap appliances like these.

But cheapest is not always best is it?

Added by John Johnstone on 26 July 2008.
Not if it ends up looking as bad as this no!!!!!!

Added by Peter Bromley on 27 July 2008.
Paul, I see the North Yorkshire pumps on the '58' plate are the all in one Volvo cab & are decidedly better looking than this thing!

Added by Bryan Sweeney on 05 November 2008.
Hi Bryan, thanks for that info. I was talking to a North Yorks merchanic this week and he told me 2 new pumps had been delivered and another 2 expected anytime soon. He mentioned they were the better looking double cab, they are lower too with air suspention at the rear to enable the ladders to be removed easier. Have you got a photo of them ? if so could you post it please. Cheers Paul.

Added by Paul Warnock on 05 November 2008.
Brian, I have just seen a photo of the new 58 plate Volvo's for North Yorkshire they do look a bit better. I think 2 are going to Harrogate, 1 to Richmond and the other to Tadcaster. 4 more to come next year.

Added by Paul Warnock on 11 November 2008.
can someone put a picture on of the new cabbed volvo so we can all see the only thing i can say is why don't anybody who has bought these volvo paint the corner of the bumpers why leave them ????????? it looks so odd

Added by Calvin Fox on 11 November 2008.
Hi Paul, apologies for not getting back to you re the pic, they are just similar to the new Volvos over here (picture 9630), apparently our local station in Coleraine is getting 1 shortly fitted with CAFS to replace a 2007 Volvo FL (picture 2899).
