Stanley Falkland Islands Bedford Watertender1984 Bedford/Carmichael 'B' Type Water Tender
Stanley, the tiny capitol city of the Falkland Islands was founded in 1844 with the first fire brigade being established on the British Colony in 1898 and was known as the Stanley Volunteer Fire Brigade. After the 1982 conflict with Argentina, the Fire Brigade recieved its first Bedford/Carmichael Type B Water Tender giving it a new lease of life, and then in 1984,the Stanley Fire Brigade recieved its second Bedford/Carmichael Type B Water Tender. These fire appliances are still in use today. The Fire Service was for many years run on a voluntary basis as part of the Public Works Department until 1985 when the Islands Fire & Rescue Service was born and a full time staff of two were employed in conjuction with the Police Force. The service is today a stand alone department comprising 5 full time firemen and 40 retained firemen who are paid an hourly wage, and a retention bonus. The Fire Service today is still based in Stanley and is the only brigade on the Islands, and its worth noting that in 2008,they mark their 110th Anniversary serving the Falkland Islands community of just 3,000 people, but now from a new fire station opened in 1988.......
