We can do that in the UK.....West Midlands have a hydraulic water tower (when its on the run...spends much time in workshops) it has two monitors, one is a normal sized aerial monitor...the other is a massive 'deluge' cannon....two normal pumps struggle to feed it, they deploy a High Volume Pump to supply it.....it doesn't extinguish the fire..it drowns it.....and it to has a wi-fi remote control. I never saw a deck chair in the lockers for the operator though !!!!

So why not use Whitfield units as a 4th alarm or special call them to the scene?

Why 4500gpm? Is this an area with hydrants? Is it the maximum flow?

As I understand it, the Whitfield County companies covered Dalton stations while Dalton drowned the fire. The building was too dangerous to permit interior operations. It was an operation that ground and packaged carpet scraps for recycling, so there was a lot of fuel It was also sprinklered. My guess is that the flow was limited by what they could handle with the master streams.

Another fire today at the same site. The old buildings had been demolished and replaced with new buildings and high density sprinklers. The chief hit the fire with 32 on-duty firemen, pulled in 48 off-duty firemen and put 10 of them at the fire, leaving 36 to man the vacant stations. The fire was knocked down in 2-3 hours.

Recalling off duty firefighters seems like an obvious way of dealing with a large incident - or numerous overlapping ones - and is commonplace in the USA.

But, despite cutbacks and shrinking budgets, it does not yet seem to be a practice which is widespread in the UK.
