Mounting a pump on a turntable ladder seems a sensible idea, but in practice it was (and still is) rather unusual. The big advantage for a volunteer fire company in a small town like this (with around 30,000 citizens back then) was that it saved money by adding a pumping capacity to a truck that would otherwise have much more limited uses. The big two man hose cart - rarely found on most turntables - completed the transformation.
