Almost as useful as an ALP but more maneuverable and less costly, these articulated ladders with cages are rapidly becoming the standard in many countries. The most common version - exemplified here - is the 23/12. It has an effective height of 32 metres, but more importantly it has a horizontal reach of 12 metres at 23 metres height. It can also reach down, as shown here, to - for example - load or unload crew members or victims or to reach over pitched roofs to access the back side. This versatility may hopefully persuade more UK fire brigades to add more ladders like this to their fleet strength. Compared to other countries, aerials of all types are much less popular in the UK - and this is often reflected by their absence or delayed attendance at major structure fires.
