Even back in in the sixties it was very common for fire brigades all over Germany to operate cranes based on standard truck chassis like this, although many were on tandem axles. As this great photo very clearly shows, these early examples were a lot smaller than what we commonly see today, when many fire services have heavy cranes, usually 40 - 70 ton (and even heavier) custom designs from Liebherr, Grove or Krupp.
