These Atego based 4X4 pump tankers are a less costly alternative to the Unimog series for off road firefighting duties. Although I have not driven one and cannot compare their off road capabilities to the Mog first hand, I think they are probably a bit less versatile - but still likely to be useful enough when it comes to the great majority of off road situations which most firefighters will ever likely encounter. The addition of the winch suggests an effort to overcome any limitations which the design may entail, and it’s not an ultra expensive addition.

Prices are always an issue. Does a fire service buy four pricey units or five less costly ones? It really depends on what needs to get done 90 percent of the time, because it’s just not cost effective to shoot for 100%.

Despite that, the Unimog does remain the ultimate off road choice, for those organizations which can afford to acquire them…
