The city is protected by a French Marine Battalion, rather similar to the French Engineer Regiment which serves the metropolitan Paris conurbation. All other fire services in the country are organized by Department. Because the hinterland to the North of the port city is very hilly countryside covered in extremely flammable gorse and brush, the outskirts represent a serious wildfire risk, especially in summer. Strong dry “mistral” winds from North Africa often make this scenario much worse, so the BMPM operate a a large fleet of 4X4 and 6X6 brush pumpers and tankers. Most of the forty plus units are Unimogs, with these 4000 liter tank units being the most common version.
