This was the standard German DIN specification for a pump water tender for several decades. Most were built on either Mercedes or Magirus chassis. Very rugged and reliable, many served for decades, although this example’s fifty years is at the high end.
Although the Magirus version was a completely integrated build, with engine, chassis, body, crew cab, pump and most of its equipment built by Magirus, the Mercedes was bodied by several different firms. Despite this, the bodywork was highly standardized and they all looked very similar. Probably the common MB body was by Metz, who of course were also a major supplier of turntable ladders.
