The VdF in Italy has an identical protocol, as their ambulances are also not dispatched as part of everyday EMS responses. I must confess that I am a bit confused by this approach. If the fire service has a fully equipped and staffed ambulance available, why let it sit idle when it can be deployed to help a heart attack victim or to address some other serious medical problem?
