The wheels look small, but this low stance helps with roadholding, stability and ease of access to the cab and equipment. In volunteer fire companies it is often very important to make equipment as easy to drive and operate as possible, because crew members are not by any means as frequently using them as full time firefighters - who may make several runs every shift. In addition, volunteer companies have proportionally more very young, rather older and / or female members, who may be less physically fit or well suited to the exertion routinely experienced by paid firefighters in their prime of life.
