The TLF was the only German pumper specification for many decades to have a plumbed in small diameter hose reel like this example. These days they are still sometimes fitted to LF and HLF pumpers, but are still rather uncommon. These days the reason for this is similar to the rationale for their very limited use in North America and France as well. Services in these countries generally require a flow of 350 to 450 LPM or even more to be available on the first hose line to initiate the interior structure fire attack. The high pressure hose reel typically maxes out at around 150 LPM, and is therefore limited to use on minor out door fires.
The side mounted reels seen here could be unrolled directly from the vehicle or carried by two firefighters. They typically held several 15 meter lengths of pre-connected 52mm attack hose. A universal German concept, they were used for many decades until being replaced by lightweight baskets, each holding three lengths - and also by the very common addition of American style shoulder packs for inside use.
