The G wagen was once quite often used as a rescue rig, just like Land Rovers and Ford A series in the UK and various different American panel vans in Belgium. They were all small, fast and inexpensive compared to full size rescue tenders. But, when rescue pumpers started to become commonplace, they rapidly became superfluous. These new pumpers carried as much - or even more - rescue gear, had a full crew and were deployed at increasing numbers of locations, so response times were quite good. Some of these light rescue tenders, like this example, were repurposed for a while before retirement, but many were just sold off as their usefulness had expired .
