This Braidwood open body design was introduced on motorized fire appliances around thirty years before this Leyland was built. Although the UK adopted enclosed fire pumps much later than other countries like France (1921) they were becoming quite popular - even if a bit expensive - by the mid thirties. But open cab appliances were built in very small numbers after WWII, including a few Dennis F2 series, and by 1949 almost all new units were fully enclosed and most were already forward control designs too. The fact that this example served for thirty years is not all that exceptional. It took a very long time for brigades to finally replace the prewar and wartime issued trucks which they had to rely on for front line and later reserve duties.
