Although BSPP had fully enclosed heavy pumpers in the early 1920s, the brigade continued to buy these open first aid pumper designs well into the 1960s. One reason for this that I have heard was that it was so that crew members could man the unit and descend from it more quickly. Another, more obviously, might have been that they were less expensive than enclosed alternatives….
