The 110 mm hoses carried in these heavy pumpers was stored in preconnected flakes on the roof, rather like the standard approach for accommodating 125 mm hose on typical North American rigs. This explains the rather low height of the side locker, as illustrated here. The LDH served two purposes:

- Connection to the corresponding outlet on a high volume hydrant.
- Relaying water from a hydrant or other water source to one or more pumpers at the fireground.

As in France pumps are rated at 15 rather than 10 AT, this was powerful enough for this kind of high volume relay duty when called for.
