LKW 2 are lighter versions of the bigger LKW 1, and are widespread among German fire services. This example is a five ton GVW Sprinter with a single three person cab. Some, like the bigger LKW 1, have full crew cabs for five or six people. These logistic trucks have a rail system to carry standardized wheeled basket containers, which are preloaded with a wide variety of items which may be needed at different types of incidents. They usually have a hydraulic tailgate to facilitate speedy loading and unloading. The result is a very versatile system, enabling a fire brigade to bring supplies, special equipment, and/or extra items to all kinds of situations requiring materials which are either not carried on rescue pumpers or additional to what they may already have on board.
