The designation “L27” on the turntable would tend to suggest this may actually be a 27 meter ladder. I assume the item in the big red bag hung on the side is most likely a small boat for water rescue incidents. These are often carried on turntable ladders because they are too bulky to be carried on most pumpers, especially perhaps the rather compact units favored by many French fire services.
On second thoughts, it might well be a stretcher, for use with the basket to retrieve a bedridden patient from the upper floors of typical older French apartment buildings. These often have narrow spiral staircases and, if they have lifts, these are usually too small to accommodate a stretcher. For some French (and other European) fire services, these extrications to assist EMS teams are a fairly frequent call for turntable ladders and aerial platforms.
Yes seems awkward, but its a 24m labeled 27L same as the bigger model 37m labeled as 39L Not sure if they include dimensions from the floor + ladder size!?
