NIFB FZ9776 Leyland TD7-M'weather TL

Northern Ireland Fire Brigade 1942 Leyland TD7-Merryweather 100' TL outside what is now W12 Northland. The original photographer is unknown, the picture was given to me by a now retired ADO.

It was probably a reserve even then as the regular TL was a 1954 Leyland, OZ 8300.

Can anyone confirm if 9776 still exists? In 1993 it was up for auction in Peterborough

These unique wartime issued ladders are rather obviously based on a bus chassis, although there seems to be some doubt as to how this happened. One story is that they were “left over” after bus building was curtailed by the wartime government, while another suggests that someone in the NFS thought they were an ideal choice, given limited capacity by some other chassis builders at the time. These, and other Merryweather ladders built during the war on Leyland and Dennis chassis greatly increased the aerial resources available to the NFS compared to what they had in 1939 at the beginning of the war.
