Thirty one years is actually quite typical for a German volunteer fire company.

This was built just before the German Industrial Standard (DIN) was adopted. This specified a 800 LPM light pump, mainly intended for small volunteer fire companies, a 1600 LPM medium pump and a (relatively uncommon) 2400 LPM heavy pump. The thinking behind these standards was that a light 52 mm hose line supplied a 400 LPM branch, and a heavy 75 mm line supplied a 800 LPM branch. These ratings reflected output at 10 AT with a three meter suction lift. Then - as now - most manufacturers were building pumps which actually exceeded the DIN minimum, and of course when pumpers were set into hydrants they were able to pump higher volumes, taking advantage of water mains pressure. In Germany, the DIN standard for a fire hydrant calls for a minimum output pressure of 3.5 AT.

The DIN specification for a portable pump was also 800 LPM, and these were very popular, especially with volunteers who covered rural areas without hydrants. One very common pumper had a front mounted 800 LPM pump and a 800 LPM PP in a rear compartment, while some smaller villages settled for a van with only a PP.
