These are a rather different design than most enclosed command units in other countries. As can be seen in this photo, the sides open up like an American food truck or ice cream van, rather than having a totally enclosed rear compartment.

With nine such units, BSPP has one for every nine fire stations, rather reminiscent of London’s eleven BA Control Vans in the sixties and seventies. Unlike London, these are concentrated at only three stations, while in London each of the old divisional fire stations had its own.

In some places, including North America, Germany and Japan, small control units are located at a much higher number of fire stations. Berlin, for example, has over twenty, as does Chicago.
