I always greatly admired the 2CV, which was an amazingly innovative solution developed by a team of French engineers during WWII, whose official task - which they apparently did not do well - was to assist in the development of warplanes for the German Air Force! They thought about what their country would need for transportation after the war, a vehicle that needed to be cheap, economical and versatile. The owner could easily remove the doors, mudguards and (fabric) roof as well as the seats, so as to transport anything that could fit inside. Because of its advanced suspension and good ground clearance, it could drive over fields or open country, as well as unmade roads, and could corner at very close to its maximum speed.
Although this “ twofer” is a very unusual version, the factory also made a panel van ( widely used by the French post office ) and a popular little pickup truck. The tiny two cylinder engine used very little petrol, and although the top speed was probably not much over 50 mph, it really was able to go almost anywhere!
