Were amazing huge rigs for their time, many occupied East of France regions had some of these until the beginning of the 80' as Heavy Pumper

Added by JACQUES PETER on 30 October 2024.
A standard German heavy pumper specification from the 1930s, introduced with wartime firefighting challenges in mind. They had a 2500 LPM pump and crew accommodate for nine firefighters. These also had an 800 litre water tank and a large two man hose cart for 75 mm hose. Deliveries were located in the open compartments on each side of the rig, and both 75 and 52 mm hoses were also carried in the side lockers. As well as Mercedes, numerous examples were built on Magirus, MAN, Henschel and Krupp chassis.

I first came across one of these in Muelheim Ruhr when on a youth exchange in 1961. It was on a Magirus chassis and was indeed a massive rig, sharing its wheelbase with contemporary turntable ladders at the time. Along with a TLF16/24 water tender, a DL30 turntable and a command car, it formed a standard structure fire first response unit, with nineteen firefighters. The city of 180,000 had two of each type, all responding from a central fire station which also housed nine ambulances. Back then, it was the ONLY city in West Germany which had no volunteers to support the paid full time staff. Over the years this changed. The fire service was relocated to two new very large fire stations, each staffed by both full time personnel and a volunteer force.
