This was presumably an early Leyland enclosed pump, as it had a narrow body rather than the full width alternative style which was introduced around 1937 as I have been told.

Hi Rob, wondering if the narrower rear body was to accommodate the carriage wheels of an escape, like my miniature version by Dennis (GXN782). Hence the protruding rear wings.

Peter: I guess it’s possible, but picture 44174 shows it in service with a regular ladder and no visible gantry for an escape. In the mid thirties there were several different transitional designs between the old open Braidwood body and the fully enclosed full width limousine body, and I think this is probably an example of an early four door enclosed design - although some brigades like Newcastle still ordered open sided enclosed appliances as late as 1938.
