picture 24598 shows this prewar Newcastle city livery on a pump appliance in all its colorful glory. This Leyland-Merryweather was identical, except that it has had the white outline paintwork added to the mudguards, which was a WWII blackout feature. It was replaced in the 60s by an AEC Merryweather hydraulic ladder, as the brigade switched to Merryweather diesel appliances very soon after the war. But the unique livery survived well into the sixties, on all Newcastle and Gateshead joint fire brigade units.
