All of the early D series were engineered to accommodate a six cylinder five litre petrol engine, as in the mid and late sixties the majority of UK fire brigades had not yet developed much enthusiasm for diesel powered units. Because the D series lineup did not include any petrol engine bigger than a four cylinder used in the D300, Ford SVO sourced the mote powerful engine from Canada, where petrol engines were still being used in heavier trucks. Other engines offered in the D series were all diesels, and eventually included the standard six litre, a turbo five liter with 140 BHP and the Perkins 170 BHP V8 - which was also used by Dennis, Dodge, ERF and Shelvoke for their fire appliances.
