It was used mainly for traffic accidents and pulling cars or objects from the Seine River. Could also be used during fire to pull heavy obstacles away.
Interesting innovation. Fire services’ attitudes to cranes seem to vary a lot between countries. They are rare or even unheard of in the UK, US, Canada and Australia, not to mention most of South America, but are very common in Germany and the Czech Republic, while being fairly often seen in some other European countries - although rather few and far between in France too.
As they are not deployed very often, some German fire services have adapted them to also fill the role of water towers to increase their usefulness, but this adaptation is not by any means universal.
