The idea of installing portable reels of 38 or 52 mm pre-connected attack hoses just above the rear mounted pump goes back to some of the earliest German motor pumps. It was continued well into the 1990s, until the flexibility of more modern synthetic fabric attack hoses meant that flaked hoses in baskets were more practical.

The big hose cart - also still a feature of German pumpers - carried around 200 metres of 75 mm hose, to be used for hydrant connection and also for situations calling for a larger volume of water in the attack mode, either to feed a bigger branch or a pair of the smaller attack lines via a distributor. Because of having Stortz couplings, all of these hose lines were omnidirectional.
