The 1234 was a special fire truck chassis with an unusually powerful 340 BHP engine in a 12 ton chassis. It was very popular in Germany and also exported widely, including some units to the UK. This example, with a 4000 liter water tank, must be just on - or even over - the basic specifications weight limits.

An interesting set up here, appears to have been fitted with the Rosenbauer body fairly recently...I guess the 1234 must be a reliable chassis to justify that expenditure!

David: I also noticed that this body style is a lot more recent than the chassis. The 1234 was indeed very durable and quite a few ( with original bodywork) are still in service in Germany. I think this could have been bought used from a German fire service and rebodied for use in Hungary, or possibly involved in an accident which left the chassis and drivetrain pretty much intact but required extensive bodywork?

Rob: Approximately 200 Mercedes-Rosenbauer (1124 AF TLF 2000 and 1124 AF FFV 2000) engines were purchased by Hungary between 1997-1999. The engine shown in the picture was renovated in 2021.

Thanks Dennis! Always interesting to know some of the history. When I was in Hungary in the early nineties most of the fire trucks I saw were IFA units built in the DDR. These Mercedes must have been a very welcome improvement over all that outdated equipment.
