These carried six inch (150mm) LDH and lightweight piping, which could be used to create temporary bridging, so that water supplies could be carried over roadways without slowing down traffic. I once saw this system deployed at an exercise in Darlington, when ten Green Goddesses and one of these Commers were assembled to pump water out of the Skerne River and relay it to a group of condemned terrace houses, which had been set on fire. Needless to say, the three heavy hand lines which were eventually in use were far more than was needed to put out the rather modest flames in the small “two up, two down” houses, but the presence of so many appliances was very impressive. One rather noticeable aspect of the temporary piping bridge was that it could not cope with the height of the town’s double decker buses, which were re-routed for the occasion!
