Invented around ten years ago in theNetherlands, the Hytrans system was designed for both floodwater abatement and firefighting water supply. Operating a floating pump powered by a hydraulic fluid under pressure piped from a land based diesel generator, it eliminates the friction loss in conventional suction hose because it draws water directly from the surface. Various capacity pumps are available, with much higher volume capacity for flood removal at only 30 PSI. The use of 150 mm hoses also reduce friction losses, so that large volumes of water can be transported over long distances without any need for intermediate relay pumpers.
They are now in use extensively all over the World, and have even been acquired by FDNY, although in this case the pumps are mounted on trailers rather than a transporter like this French example, which is much more common.
