JP - Do you happen to know if those backpacks are hose containers or small water tanks with hand pumps? Both types are used in the US by brush pumper crews, but I am not sure which type is popular in France.

These bags are equipped with hoses and connections.

Some SDIS "Regional Area Departement Fire & rescue Servies" added small portable pumps and small equipment in addition to the hoses. Hand pumps are seldom used in France.

Thanks. It does seem that most European fire services are more inclined to use brush trucks and tankers with water (or foam) most often on wildfires, while in North America the absence of nearby water supplies and/or driveable terrain often means a reliance on ground crews and air tankers. Every fire is different, so the tactics do of course always depend on fire conditions, topography and not least who and what equipment is available!
