Surprisingly this big rig does not have a trailing steering axle, as this is a very common feature of similar units in other countries.

I wonder if they envisaged some off road work hence 6x4 ?

If you want to go off road you really need a 6x6 or even an 8x8 chassis, and many European fire services have them to carry special purpose containers or equipment platforms. These days it’s quite possible to get either with a driven steering trailing axle, so I think - perhaps cynically- that this 6X4 is probably configured like this because it is a less costly alternative. picture 44198 illustrates a four axle rig with a trailing steered axle.

Rob, it's more than likely just specified like this as a like for like replacement of the New Dimension prime movers
