East Sussex Mercedes Unimog Animal Rescue Unit
A Purpose built Mercedes Unimog 4 x 4 off road appliance designed to provide assistance with animal rescues. Fitted with a Hydraulic Crane capable of lifting Farm animals from open water, ditches etc.
this appliance some times gets call out over the boarder to kent.
on the 25th oct the appliance was call out to a horse stuck hedge when this appliance get a shout crowboroughs landrover l4t also has to attend.

well david this gets about 2/3 shouts a week from east sussex or kent.
this appliance is the only 1 is east sussex which is animal rescue based but the ridge east sussex also has a duel purpose truck which is a flat bed truck
which supports as a holder and provider of foam stocks, inflatable air structure, salvage equipment which also has a hydraulic crane.

also east sussex did use to have an appliance like the SRT from gloucester. but the uckfield based appliance was brought off east sussex from ireland fire service see picture 4224

Ah right, thats interesting that it gets that many! I figure East Sussex has replaced the RT with the 2 new TSUs? Thanks

yes thats right east sussex have 2 tsu 1 based at battle and the other lewes.

In these days of extreme financial pressure on UK fire services, I find it surprising that a vehicle as expensive as a Unimog would be dedicated to animal rescues...

Staffordshire F&RS a couple of years ago placed two interesting dual purpose appliances on-the-run, both having animal rescue capabilities as one of their roles.
In the north of the county, based at rural Leek, is a 4x4 MAN Water Tender/Animal Rescue Unit, built by Emergency One. It has all the usual capabilities of an off-road pump but with the addition of animal rescue equipment.
In the south, based at Cannock is an Angloco-bodied Mercedes Unimog Wildfire/Animal Rescue Unit. Every year Cannock Chase sees its fair share of protracted wildfires and animal rescues, so the appliance has been kept busy and has proved a big hit. Both appliances operate on a county wide basis. Staffordshire Fire Service's own website has pictures of these vehicles in their news archives. Or it's easier just to Google "Staffordshire animal rescue unit", and request images.
An interesting item on the equipment inventory that made me smile: extra thick gloves!!!
