Berlin's BA pods are usually called in on second or special alarms, but do also routinely turn out on the initial alarm to known incidents where it might be reasonably assumed they might be needed. These include basement fires, industrial fires involving chemicals, rubber or plastic goods, hazmat incidents and multi occupancy high rise building fires. The service has three units. Each carries a cascade system as well as numerous full cylinders, including long duration sets.
For precisions, First Alarm vehicles are in fluo orange color and second alarm vehicles in red.

All of the WLF trucks and AB containers are red, which used to be the standard color and is still the livery on older reserve units and some front line units still with some of the city’s volunteer fire companies. As I discussed with Berlin personnel, most of the AB special containers do not respond on first alarm assignments. But they can be dispatched to incidents if the command centre interprets the incoming call is describing a situation where a specific unit might be needed. They also dispatch other specials (such as cranes and crane tenders) along the same lines.
