The Crest Forest (California) Fire Department is a municipal agency which operates within the San Bernadino National Forest. The lone fire station sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet and is staffed by career firefighters who operate a Class-A structural engine as well as BE25. Note: The department just returned from the "Slide Fire" where they served for nearly 10 days. The blaze took 12,759 acres and destroyed 272 homes. Nearly 1500 firefighters were assigned to the incident, which was just one of 19 that devastated Southern California last week.

Can someone please shed some light on why I have seen so many US rigs with chocked wheels? Do these vehicles not have reliable breaking? Is the chocking just a fail safe and if so how common is break failure when a rig is parked up? I have never seen a UK rig with it's wheels chocked. Thanks.

Chocking is part of a safety standard. The US trucks have excellent brakes. The extra precaution helps to cover the "human" factor.

I guess the extra precaution makes sense. In the UK we just rely on professional drivers remembering to apply the breaks.

Chocking is not only a common US practice. It is a mandatory safety precaution on all Tokyo Fire Department equipment - and TFD divers are certainly among the most professional in the World!
