I often wonder if converting these to forward control and building a full cab on the modified chassis was actually more or less expensive than simply using the small TK with the factory cab.

It is something that has puzzled me. Must be some reason for TJ conversions continuing once the TK introduced.

Presumably the J4 was smaller, lighter and actually cheaper?
