The five ton Sprinter reflects a recent trend in both Germany and parts of France to provide logistics support to rescue pumpers by using relatively small vehicles. These can be quickly loaded up with modular wheeled baskets containing a wide variety of specialized equipment with items, which are either not already carried on pumpers, or which are carried in comparatively small quantities. This adds a level of extra flexibility, without relying exclusively on transporters with special pods/containers, which may be unnecessary and/or too far away from an incident to be able to respond quickly enough.

An additional role for these small logistics vehicles with some fire services in Germany and France is to replace the German KLF and French VTU types as minor alarm response vehicles. Once again, a dedicated unit can sometimes be replaced by a much more versatile vehicle - which can be crewed by two or three people and can easily carry all of the items needed for almost any kind of minor alarm incident, as well as filling the logistical backup role when needed.
