Goddesses found their way to a second life of useful service in many corners of the World, this probably being the most southern location, and the Icelandic example on this site being the furthest north. They also proved very handy during the rather unfortunate British fire brigade strikes when these occurred, when they were crewed by mainly military personnel.

During the summer of 1974 they were issued to every brigade to cover for the large number of pumps going off the run or burnt out.

Although they were not often deployed, it seems the idea of having a significant number of fully operation fire appliances in reserve made a great deal of sense, even if they were older designs and a bit basic by modern standards. At one point in time, there was some discussion about re-creating a national pool of older ex fire service units or “red goddesses” but it seems nothing came of it?

With the events of last summer stretching many fire brigades to the limit, perhaps it has come time to think about this idea again…
