Great photo of a modern German rescue pumper - "opened up" to demonstrate that very little of the available space is not fully utilized. The folding steps help to make even the highest storage shelves accessible, while the crew access is helped by the swiveling step and large colorful grab handles. Although the equipment layout varies from one fire service to another, this example is quite typical.

This unit is destined for Luedenschied, a town of 71,000 people in north western Germany. Like most German towns with less than 100,000, the fire service is all volunteer. In these communities, EMS is usually not a fire service responsibility - but in this case it is, and each of the three fire stations has ambulances. The fire and rescue fleet at each fire station includes a rescue pumper, a water tender, an articulated ladder tower and a command van. The main station is also home to a light 4X4 utility, a heavy rescue truck, two WLF/AB roll on container carriers, a logistics truck and two staff cars.

Because of the absence of payroll expense, the town has been able to build three quite new, large and well appointed fire stations and operates a very modern and up to date fleet of fire, rescue and emergency medical vehicles, including Benz, MAN, VW, Nissan and Audi examples….
