When I visited there it was explained that the nearest fire station was not very near the estate. Apparently quite a lot of the estate workers were trained as firefighters and really enjoyed drills with their pumper, which - as seen here - was always beautifully maintained.

There is now a retained one pump station in Sandringham village itself, which responded to 48 alarms last year. But the very large house and other buildings would justify quite a considerably larger response, so I imagine they still have an employee brigade - although it’s not clear if they continue to have a fully fledged pumper.

I just learned learned that the estate fire brigade was merged into Norfolk in 1968 - not long after I visited the house.

I have just discovered another Morris Commercial from Norfolk survives DPW111. It is a now a mobile refreshment vehicle based Shaftesbury having been a caravan/mobile home for many years. Supplied to Downham Market.

When I first set eyes as a kid on Darlington’s Morris Magirus turntable ladder, I was quite surprised that the manufacturer of the ubiquitous Morris Eight car would be building anything so magnificent! Of course only a few years later I learned that John Morris of Salford had nothing to do with the other Morris Motors concern.
