Fire Engines Photos

AS far as I know, Austin never built fire appliance bodies, even for their own use - and in fact very few Loadstars were placed into service with fire brigades, including factory brigades. This bodywork looks pretty generic, but has a close resemblance to many Carmichael designs.

It certainly looks quite different from the large number of Loadstars bodied at the Swindon Home Office bodywork’s for Cornwall.

The long double handled locker above the rear wheel arch was a Carmichael "feature" in the days before many manufacturers switched over to roller shutter locker covers. In their contemporary literature the firm actually quite proudly mentioned this distinctive design - and it was an improvement over some others, such as the Whitson. Presumably the reason for omitting rear doors was that it was expected that the crew would only be riding in the cab for a brief time, as it was going to be pretty much confined to the factory premises.
