PLF623 Ford Thames 500E Wadham P/FoT
One of the thirteen 1956 Fordson Thames 500E Firefly appliances with which they were equipped. Ordered by the Ministry of Supply with bodies by Wadham Brothers in Waterlooville, they were built on a three ton chassis, and fitted
with a diminutive ‘cost cutter’ 4-cylinder OHV petrol engine of 3,611cc and were perhaps somewhat ambitiously designated as pump foam tenders (P/FoT). However, these diminutive appliances only carried 150 gallons of water and 36 gallons of foam compound in a separate tank, along with a Coventry Climax major pump.
This served at ROF Glascoed, south Wales.

Perhaps there was a lot of on site fixed fire fighting equipment. 3.6ltr does not sound that small an engine for a British truck !

Although in addition to these a few were exported, I can’t think of any of this generation of Fordsons being supplied to county or municipal fire brigades, and the Thames Trader only counted a handful.
Ford’s absence from the fire brigade scene up to 1966 made our job of selling the new D series a very uphill struggle, but eventually around thirty brigades bought them, including quite large numbers for Gloucestershire and Lancs.
